Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department at Foxcroft School offers personalized learning to challenge and support students so that every girl feels like she can be successful in math.

Teachers foster a growth mindset in students, helping each girl in her commitment and effort to master math.

In classes, students apply their learning in math to the real world and (yes!) exciting challenges. In Geometry, students act as city planners to design 4 square blocks, and engage in a mock trial to debate triangle congruence. Our Probability and Statistics classes mount trail cameras in the campus woods to collect and analyze data on wild animals. Students carry this joy of math into their challenging Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics classes.

Portrait of a STEM Graduate

At the completion of the STEM program at Foxcroft, a graduate…

...demonstrates scientific and mathematical literacy.
...designs and implements experiments, and effectively communicates work.
...applies mathematical and scientific concepts to solve new and novel problems in the real world.
...self-reflects on growth and progress and evaluates own work.

Scientific & Mathematical Literacy

  • Reads, interprets, and presents scientific and mathematical data, including graphs.

  • Evaluates scientific claims in primary scientific literature and popular culture.

  • Identifies reliable resources and uses them to construct arguments; evaluates bias.

  • Demonstrates numerical literacy in interpreting and translating between different types of numerical information.

Experimental Design & Modeling

  • Asks questions and defines problems, based on personal interest, puzzling phenomena, or a problem to be solved.

  • Thoughtfully designs, performs, analyzes, and communicates the results of investigations, using appropriate technology.

  • Develops and uses scientific and mathematical models.

Problem-Solving

  • Applies iterative design to articulate processes, construct explanations, and/or design solutions.

  • Recognizes and discusses the interconnectedness of concepts and patterns.

  • Applies knowledge and skills to new scenarios, including real-world problems.
